So here we are in September a few months into our marriage. The three of us, me, my husband and my son, in a one bedroom apartment. Things had been going pretty well for a family that just got thrown together. I was of course madly in love with Tony, but we were still learning about each other. I had quit my job because it was not giving me enough hours. Luckily Tony was making enough money that I could stay at home with my son. We were spending a lot of time with Jason and Vikki having fun. There were plenty of dinners and card playing. Then the good news came. We were PREGNANT! The unfortunate part was that we could not afford insurance so we had to suffer through for a while without seeing a doctor.
So here I am pregnant and miserable. This pregnancy was not anything like my first one. With Lane I never had morning sickness, I would just get a little queasy when I smelled certain foods. All in all my first pregnancy was very easy. This one however was not. Hello morning sickness! My sickness was so bad that on my birthday in November I threw up twice on the way from the movies, I felt awful. In December our good friends Vikki and Jason found out they were expecting too. Eventually I started feeling movement in my womb. During theses first months of our pregnancy we were teased relentlessly by friends and family alike that we were going to have twins. Then one day whilWei was taking a shower I got the kick of all kicks my baby hit me on both sides of my belly and I nearly lost my balance.
Now it is February and we have finally been able to get some insurance and get me to a doctor. We were so excited! We knew that since we were this far along the doctor would surely do an ultrasound and we could find out the sex of the baby. We decided to go to same OB/GYN as Jason and Vikki. In fact we made our first appointment on the same day that they had one. They stayed in the lobby with Lane while we met with the ultrasound tech. I lay there with my belly covered with jelly and the tech with the probe giving me the first look at my baby. She started with my lower abdomen and found the head then she followed the body up to the legs all the while taking measurements. When she was measuring the legs I noticed a circular spot on the side of the screen. I said “What is that?”
She said “It could just be one of your organs pressing in. Wait a minute.”
“No, what is that?” I said.
She moved the probe back down to the bottom of my belly, then said, “Well, that’s another head.”
Tony completely stunned said “You’re joking right?” even though he could see the screen.
I went on to ask the tech to make sure that there were only two, which thank God there were only two. The tech told us that she would need the doctor to come in and confirm her findings. When the doctor came in he did some looking around and told us that it appeared that they were both girls. He then mentioned something about there not being a membrane which meant nothing to me. He told us that he was not very experienced with this and wanted to refer me to a specialist. We walked out of that room in a daze. Before we made it to the lobby we had called our parents and gave them the news. Those conversations went a little like this:
Well, it’s a girl, and there’s two of them.
You’re kidding!
Nope.
When we got out to the lobby where Jason, Vikki, and Lane were waiting, Lane ran up to me and said “How many babies do you have in your tummy?”(Vikki had taught him to say this).
“How many do you want there to be?” I asked.
He turns and looks at Vikki who holds up two fingers. So he turns to me and does the same.
I looked right at him and said “Well, you got your wish. There’s two!”
Of course both Jason and Vikki’s mouth fell open.
